4 Tips For Durable Dentures

For most people, full or partial dentures can last for 5 years or more. The average lifespan of a pair of dentures is about five to seven years, but be kind to them and they will give you many years of life. To help ensure your dentures last long and stay comfortable, here are 4 tips that can help.

1# Give them a break at night

By taking your full or partial dentures out every night, you are preserving them and giving your gums a break! Most importantly, removing dentures will ease the pressure on your gums. If you were to keep the dentures on overnight you are likely to experience sore sports and loose fitted dentures. Also, be careful when you take them out each night, as they could break if dropped.

2# Give them a though soak

Dentures were made to work well in mouth, so their natural environment is wet. Don’t leave them out in the dry air as that may cause them to warp out easily. This could make your dentures fall out more often or feel uncomfortable on your gums. When you take them out each night, keep them covered by water and preferably use denture cleaner.  This will help make your dentures last for years to come. Remember to use only lukewarm water for your dentures. Hot water could change the shape of your dentures, especially the gum coloured base. Clean your dentures everyday at least twice a day, together with your teeth if you are wearing partial dentures. This can prevent foul odour and staining of your dentures. Ideally, use a denture toothpaste or a denture cleaner. Teeth toothpaste may be too abrasive for your dentures and may damage your dentures.Soaking is not a substitute for brushing, though. You still need to brush to remove build up of any plaque.

#3 Visit our denturist office

Your mouth can change over time as well as your gums can change with age and health factors. It is best to visit our denture clinic if you feel that something is not fitting right. Ideally, you should always come in for an annual check with our denturist. Even if you take perfect care of your dentures, you still need to come in every six months or annually. That way, our denturist can make any small adjustments to your dentures needed to keep them comfortable.

#4 Maintain Them in Good Shape

It is important to realize that denture care is not just about caring well for dentures. With effective denture repairs, you can easily use your dentures for many years without any issues. Ask your denturist what would be ideal treatment to your full or removable partial denture. There are many options available to ‘update’ your old dentures such as: rebase, reline and repair. The denture rebase is a denture maintenance service where all the acrylic in the dentures are replaced, leaving the denture teeth in place.

Smile Denture and Implant Clinic is happy to provide personalized care for your new dentures. These are some of the essential denture repairs that you can do when a complete denture replacement is not necessary. Nevertheless, proper maintenance practices of your dentures are essential to keep them in top shape for a long time. Moreover, following these tips will go a long way to helping you extend the life of your partial dentures or full dentures.
