What can you do about missing teeth?

At Smile Denture and Implant Clinic we see many patients suffering from missing teeth. Often patients with missing teeth are self conscious, have difficulty eating and sometimes experience pain. Missing teeth may affect you more than you would expect, and replacing them can be a truly life changing experience. While it is unfortunate when someone loses a tooth luckily patients nowadays have several options to replace it.

What options are available to replace missing teeth?

When you have missing teeth, there are a few ways in which the missing gap can be filled:

Removable Partial Denture

This solutions is best suited for people with one or more than missing teeth.Partials are a much better option than a complete denture to replace lost teeth in your lower jaw if some natural teeth can be saved. Most people can adapt easier to a partial denture as opposed to a full denture. These are also cheaper than a full denture and they are usually clasped onto a natural teeth.

Temporary Denture or “Flipper”

This denture is a also a type of a removable denture and a good temporary solution for one or a few missing teeth. Depending on how many teeth are missing, a dental flipper may have clasps like a retainer to hold it in place around your existing teeth. If you are ready for an implant but are waiting for the site to heal, a dental flipper can be a good temporary solution.

Removable Full Denture

When a patient is missing most or all of their permanent teeth these dentures may be the only reasonable solution next to implants. The big advantage of removable full dentures is that they are custom made and personalized for you. This will help make them look and feel as close as possible to your natural teeth. One of the drawbacks is that since they are removable you have to take them out at night and take proper care to ensure optimum results.

A bridge is a fixed tooth restoration that is held in place by cementing it onto your other teeth. This is the best solution for patients who have missing tooth and healthy adjacent teeth that could support the bridge.

Denture Implants

This is by far the best option, as it doesn’t cause damage to other teeth. Dental implants are  fixed in place, has the longest survival rate, and the highest success rate. Denture supported implants are also sometimes called overdentures. They are secured in place with dental implants providing superior look and feel – they feel as close to your natural teeth as you can get. Also, dental implants together with remaining teeth provide stimulation to your jawbone that can help prevent the bone loss. Bone loss is also a common problem with conventional dentures requiring adjustments down the line.
