When Dentures on Implants are a Superior Choice

When deciding on how to replace missing teeth, patients have multiple options. Many patients choose to get full or partial dentures to replace their missing teeth. Dentures provide an excellent outcome for replacement of missing teeth and restoring eating and speaking ability. However, some patients experience slight level of discomfort as well as wish to have superior fit close to natural teeth.

What many denture wearing patients do not know is that it is possible to upgrade your conventional dentures to dentures on implants. Regular dentures rest on the gums whereas the implant supported denture is placed on dental implants that are surgically placed in the mouth. There are, however, criteria that will determine if you are a good candidate for the dental implant procedure as well as implant supported dentures. Typically, a good dental implant candidate will be in a good health with enough jaw bone present to absorb the dental implant. At our denture clinic, we work closely with dental surgeons who will assess your medical history and determine if you are a good dental implant candidate.

Implant Supported Dentures

Implant supported dentures provide a superior fit, major improvement in function and increase in bite force. They are more comfortable and can allow you to eat your favorite foods by restoring natural chewing ability. Furthermore, they can eliminate the need for removing dentures at night, accidental breakage or irritation on your gums. This way, your new fixed dentures on implants or screw in dentures will feel and look as close as possible to the natural teeth. Patients may also choose removable dentures on implants or snap on denture which allow for easy cleaning and will remain stable in the mouth when in use.

The superior fit of denture implants does come at a higher price however. Dental implants are charged individually, and they can start at $1,500 and upwards. Also, in some instances, dental implant may fail, and subsequent surgery may be required. This is because sometimes the dental implants can be rejected by your jaw, but this happens no more than 2 percent of the time. When it happens, the implant is usually replaced with another one that’s slightly larger.  Also, as any type of dental surgery implants carry risks of infection, pain and other risks that should always be discussed with the dental surgeon.
